How to choose the right length necklace?

Necklaces come in many different lengths, depending on where you want it to sit on the wearer. Often, necklaces also have a so-called extension chain, which allows the wearer to adjust the length of the necklace so that it fits nicely.

The lengths of necklaces have their own names, of which Choker is the best known. Other lengths include: Collar, Princess, Matinee, Opera and Rope or Lariat.

    • Choker necklaces have been back in fashion lately. Chokers follow the neckline tightly.
    • Collar necklaces are usually a little over 40cm long and sit nicely with collars.
    • Princess is the standard size for light pendants, at +46cm. It fits over the upper bust.
    • Matinee fits mid-chest, length about 51-61cm
    • Opera necklaces are commonly used with party dresses. It settles below the bust. Length +76cm
    • Rope or Lariat is a very long necklace, more than 86cm long, which can also be worn double.

    Lengths of necklaces for men

Often, men's necklaces of the same length will sit slightly higher than a woman's, due to the wider neck. However, this is very individual. Many men's pendants use what is known as a sliding knot, which allows the length of the necklace to be adjusted considerably - from 55cm to 80cm.
