Children are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of lead. Lead levels are tested not only in jewellery but also in other objects that children can easily put in their mouths.

The lead content of parts of jewellery must be less than 0.05 p-%. This also applies to non-metallic parts of jewellery. In jewellery, lead may be present as part of the metal alloys or as impurities, for example in pigments. The bans apply not only to ordinary jewellery but also to piercing jewellery, hair ornaments, cufflinks and watches, among others.

The restriction on lead is in Annex XVII, entry 63 of the Reach Regulation.
